Some thoughts on what art is not...
Art is not objects without anything to engage the viewer (this could be a contentious one)
Art is not objects that are banal, aesthetically uninspiring, or lacking in symbollic or informative conent - in otherwords meaningless
Art is not only process
Art is not mechanical

Hmm... sometimes I think some art that I do is meaningless. I can create something that engages the viewer, but that does not mean the art has a purpose. Does something have purpose if it just attracts attention to itself for 1 min and then is never thought of again? Hmm but I guess eveyone has different things going on and one person can derived a meaning from it when another does not, but then perhaps that is not nessisary... perhaps what has meaning is the person doing the art and expressing what they have a need to.
