What is art?

A question that has occupied philosphers for generations and which is likely to keep many more generations of philosphers and artists busy in the future.

Here I will be setting out my thoughts, ideas and suggestions for answers to the question "What is Art?" and defining attendant concepts and terms.

Dont expect this to be a regularly updated thing (though if I get the time and inclination it may become so).

Do expect there to be images to illustrate concepts or points or simply to add atmosphere:-)

For me, the question of "what is art" is a red herring. "Art" is anything which its maker claims to be art. "Art" is that which is made by someone who calls themselves an artist. If somebody has made a piece of work, and claims artistic inspiration for it, or claims that it embodies an artistic statement, there is little point challenging that.

Far more worthwhile, in my opinion, is to ask whether any particular piece of art is good art, and what is required of an artwork in order to make it good or bad.

Ah but what happens when the artist is no longer around to say "this is art"? Think of some of the piles of rubbish (literally) that have been exhibited as art in installation exhibitions, what status will these have when the artists and/or gallery are not there to say "this is art"? How will archeologists see these things if they were to stick around for another 500-1000 years?

Art is more in the eye of the audience than that of the artist as the works have a life of their own once they leave the artist's possession.
